Turkish Coffee
Turkish Coffee
Description
Drinking Turkish coffee together is one of the best ways of socialization in Turkish culture.
Fortune Telling
Another popular and fun way of socializing over a cup of Turkish coffee is fortune-telling. After you drink your coffee, you turn over your coffee cup on its saucer, you wait until the cup cools down and you try to read the shapes left by the coffee grounds. It is believed that these shapes represent your future.
Turkish coffee is also very important during marriage customs. When a potential husband and his family visit the girl’s family to ask their permission for the marriage, Turkish coffee is served by the future bride as a tradition. Today, “just for fun” , the girl puts salt and black pepper into the future groom’s coffee during cooking and if the groom drinks the coffee, this means that he loves the girl and he is ready for the marriage.
You can make Turkish coffee from any kind of coffee beans grounded to a very fine powder and you need to have the right equipment. “Cezve” ( a small pot with a long handle) and “fincan” ( small coffee cups).
Ingredients
Preparation
-
You need to know the sugar amount beforehand so you always need to ask your guests how sweet they like their coffee to prepare it accordingly ( never add sugar to your coffee after you cook it).
It can be with sugar, less sugar or without sugar. If your guests have different sugar taste, you need to make their coffee separately.
- Put one coffee cup of cold water for each guest into the pot.
- Add 1 full teaspoon of finely ground coffee for each person and sugar to taste (optional), and mix them. Place the pot over low heat.
- Let it cook for a while, stirring gently a couple of times.
- When it starts to boil, foam appears on top of it. Using a teaspoon, share the foam into each coffee cup and continue heating.
- When it boils again, remove it from the heat and pour the rest into the cups.
- Serve immediately.
Bon Appetit!
